CORNWALL: The Indian King Poets

The Indian King Poets

10.00-12.30 most Mondays (with the Garmoe Poets meeting on 14.00-16.00 on the fourth Monday monthly)

Venue: The Indian King Poetry Centre, Trefrew Road, Camelford PL32 9TP

Publicity material for this group says:

The Indian King Poets was established in the early 1990s as part of the creative writing programme of The Indian King Arts Centre, a community arts centre in Camelford.  This group continues to meet on most Monday mornings from 10.00-12.30.  Each session starts with writing, from a visual, aural or verbal prompt; reading back and discussion of that writing follows, and the session ends with a close critical look at poems in progress brought by participants.  Examination of different poetic form happens when interest/need demands.

A long waiting list has led to a new monthly group, The Garmoe Poets, meeting on the 4th Monday, 14.00-16.00, although this is itself now fully subscribed.

The group also organises day long workshops led by visiting poets; readings and Open Mic sessions; critical reading sessions of the T S Eliot Prize shortlist.  Members encourage and support each other to submit work to magazines, enter competitions, and to put together pamphlets and collections.

When the Poetry Society invited local members to establish Stanzas round Britain, IKP set up as the Camelford or North Cornwall Stanza, and welcomes members of the Poetry Society to become involved.
