Enchantment Will Find Me | 17-Mar-16 to 08-May-16

Enchantment Will Find Me invites you into the intoxicating world of Alberto de Lacerda. Fittingly, the exhibition takes places in Royal Festival Hall, a building that was one of his great inspirations.

Alberto de Lacerda arrived in London, from Portugal, in 1951 and began a lifelong love affair with the city and in particular the South Bank. Immersing himself in the various galleries and venues of the time, de Lacerda became friends with some of the most famous artists and poets of the mid-20th century. At the time of his death in 2007 he had amassed an astonishing collection of artworks from artists such as Paula Rego, and had engaged in long correspondences with friends such as Edith Sitwell and Christopher Middleton.

This exhibition presents an archive of de Lacerda's life. Focussing on his relationship with the South Bank of London and the poets he knew, his life can be traced through fragments, letters, artworks and ephemera from the extensive collections that he left behind. On display are works by Paula Rego, David Hockney, Ceri Richards, Rory McEwen and Vieira da Silva, photographs taken of him with Jorge Luis Borges and Octavio Paz, original signatures by Walt Whitman and Federico Garcia Lorca and letters from Edith Sitwell.

From Thursday 17 March to Sunday 8 May

Open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 8pm (closed Mondays)
