Last Call for entries: Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award

The deadline for entries for the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award is approaching. The award, sponsored by Foyles and organised by The Poetry Society, goes to 100 young poets aged 11-18, and has attracted entries from New Zealand and Nigeria as well as across the UK.

Of the 100 winners, the "top 15" will be chosen for inclusion in an anthology - distributed free around the country in March 2014 - and one of two other prizes. Winners aged 14-17 are offered the chance to attend a week-long residential course at an Arvon centre, where they will be tutored by the prize's judges, David Morley and Hannah Lowe. Winners aged 11-14 receive a visit to their school from a professional poet, followed by distance mentoring. The 85 commended winners also receive book prizes and a year's youth membership to the Poetry Society.

Last year, the competition attracted over 7000 entries from over 60 countries. Judge Hannah Lowe, whose collection Chick is shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection, commented: "I would always encourage young writers to 'write what they know' and express their feelings and frustrations. We feel this competition can be a positive outlet for them."

The deadline for entries is 31st July. Full details of the competition can be found online at:
