Wayland wins CLPE Award! | 30-Jul-14

The winner of the CLPE Poetry Award 2014 is Tony Mitton for Wayland.

The CLPE Poetry Award is the only prize for published children's poetry in the UK and Tony Mitton joins a group of highly regarded previous winners including George Szirtes, Rachel Rooney, Jackie Kay and John Agard.

The other shortlisted books were:
Julia Donaldson (editor): Poems to Perform, illustrated by Clare Melinsky, Macmillan.
Kathy Henderson: The Dragon with a Big Nose, Frances Lincoln.
Joanne Limburg: Bookside Down, Salt Publishing.
Grace Nichols, Cosmic Disco, illustrated by Alice Wright, Frances Lincoln.

Awarding the prize, the judges said:
"Wayland was chosen for the mastery of the form, its epic nature and its beauty as a complete piece of art, poetry and legend. This verse retelling of the legend of a master blacksmith who fashions such "wonderful ware" that he is captured by a king is a tour de force.

One of the judges was our very own Poetry Librarian, Chris McCabe, and the chair of the judges was Roger McGough.

Wayland is illustrated by John Lawrence and published by David Fickling books. Bookside Down by Joanne Limburg (Salt Publishing) was highly commended.

The CLPE Poetry Award 2014 is sponsored
by the King's Cross partnership and to celebrate the Award, a Poetry Trail using the winning poem, the shortlisted works and the judges poems, has been created at King's Cross starting at the Visitor Centre.

Schools and individuals are invited to participate in the Poetry Trail and can pick up a Trail guide
from the King's Cross Visitor Centre or by visiting http://www.kingscross.co.uk/kx-poetry
