Have You Seen My New Blue Socks? by Eve Bunting ; illustrated by Sergio Ruzzier | 14-Sep-15

Rug Rhymes returned after the summer break on Friday 11th September and meets every Friday in term time at 10.30am until Friday 18th December.

For our Open Day last year Lorraine Mariner, one of our Assistant Librarian's, chose as her Staff Pick this Rug Rhyme's favourite.

Have You Seen My New Blue Socks? / Eve Bunting ; illustrated by Sergio Ruzzier -- New York : Clarion Books, an imprint of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2013.

"I'm trying not to be depressed.
Without my socks I feel undressed."

I didn't get on very well with Dr Seuss as a child, I found the chaos caused by The Cat in the Hat terrifying, but now I'm older I've come to appreciate Dr Seuss's use of rhyme and rhythm (and his humour!) and I love this Dr Seussesque book we acquired this year. Adults, as well as children, will relate to the tale of Duck who has mislaid his new blue socks and won't rest until he's found them.

We've read this story at our Rug Rhymes session for under-5s, which takes place on a Friday in term time. Our puppet Federico plays the part of Duck, looking for his new blue socks, while our puppet Firebird plays the part of the Peacock who saves the day. A highlight of my summer was my colleague Pascal reading this story to about a hundred rapt children in the Clore Ballroom on Level 2 when Rug Rhymes went large for Poetry International 2014.

Assistant Librarian
