Published in 1991, Jackie Kay's first collection, "The Adoption Papers" (Bloodaxe Books), was inspired by her own biography and tells the story of a black girl's adoption by a white Scottish couple. The story is told from three different viewpoints - the adoptive mother's, the birth mother's and the daughter's - and one of the poems from the sequence 'Black Bottom' won the inaugural Forward Prize for Best Single Poem. Other poems in the book explore sexuality, Scottishness and what it means to be working class.
