Funded PhD Studentship - Dundee | 06-Apr-13

Funded PhD Studentship:

The Poetry and Practice of Thomas A. Clark
University of Dundee / Scottish Poetry Library

Applications are invited for an AHRC-funded Collaborative Doctoral Award Studentship.

The successful candidate will undertake a critical and historical study of the career and oeuvre of Thomas A. Clark, poet, artist, and bookmaker, a significant figure in late 20th-century and early 21st-century experimental poetry and poetics. Within this area, the postgraduate will have scope to define the topic and approach in conjunction with the two supervisors, Professor Andrew Roberts (School of Humanities, University of Dundee) and Julie Johnstone (Librarian, Scottish Poetry Library). The SPL, which has an unrivalled collection of materials relating to Clark's work, will provide archival resources, training and specialist expertise in bibliographic, curatorial and book historical aspects of Clark's work and context, as well as access to a network of contacts and events. The postgraduate will be provided with work space and access to a computer in a private study area of the Library, as well as the normal range of facilities and postgraduate activities at the University of Dundee.

The studentship is funded for three years and will begin in 1 October 2013. It offers an outstanding opportunity to pursue a fully-funded doctoral research while gaining training and work experience in areas such as archive management and exhibition curation.

Candidates should have an undergraduate degree in English or other relevant discipline and a postgraduate master's degree, including some specialisation in recent and contemporary poetry and poetics.

Enquiries can be directed to Professor Andrew Roberts: a.m.roberts@dundee.ac.uk

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae (including the names and contact details of two academic referees), together with a short letter outlining the reasons for their interest in this research topic.  They should also submit a writing sample (for example, a Masters-level essay or a chapter of a dissertation).    Applications should be submitted to: Professor Andrew Roberts, School of Humanities, University of Dundee, Dundee, DD1 4HN
