Writer and Artist Astronomy Residency | 02-Jul-05

WRITER & ARTIST ASTRONOMY RESIDENCY

Residency: 30 Aug - 30 Nov
Comma Pojects is seeking an experienced visual artist and a published writer to work collaboratively on a three month (part-time) residency - visiting and interacting with West Yorkshire's amateur astronomy community.
The writer and artist will work together to produce a joint body of work exploring the scientific concerns and underlying concepts of the astronomers' activity.

The residency will take the form of a series of supervised visits and interactions with two membership-run observatories in West Yorkshire, as well as supplementary visits to other amateur and academic astronomy groups in the region.
The final work will be delivered in two forms: a public event (exhibition, installation or performance piece) and a publication (book, pamphlet, CDROM, audio CD or website) - with both practitioners contributing equally.
The artist and writer will be expected to lead a series of workshops, working with young people and adults, as part of the delivery of the work.

The aim of the project is to add to the new creative links presently being fostered between scientific interests and the visual and literary arts; to highlight the imagination and creativity inherent in any scientific enthusiasm, and to explore the nature of a science still partly-informed by amateur research.
The project also aims to promote the work of Yorkshire's astronomy societies in the wider community, and build permanent links between these societies and participating schools, libraries and galleries.

WHO:
Both practitioners (visual artist and writer) must be able to show experience and understanding of art-science interactions in previous or current work. They must be prepared to engage fully with the scientific ideas behind each enthusiasm, as well as respond to the social nature of the activity. They must also have experience in hosting creative practice workshops (ideally with both young people and adults).

WHEN:
Two days a week; Aug 30 to Nov 30; including hanging, workshops and events.

FEE:
£2,340 per practitioner.

HOW TO APPPLY:
Send a CV and letter of introduction to Comma Projects c/o Comma Press, 3 Vale Bower, Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire HX7 5EP.
Alternatively you can email them to ra.page@commapress.co.uk
Joint applications welcome.

Deadline: Mon 18 July 2005
Interviews will take place on the week commencing 25 July.
