Clare Pollard appointed Editor of MPT Magazine | 25-Jul-17

Clare Pollard will succeed Sasha Dugdale as MPT Editor from autumn 2017. Clare will follow in the footsteps of Ted Hughes and Daniel Weissbort, founding editors of MPT (1965), David and Helen Constantine, and most recently, Sasha Dugdale who said:

'Clare will be an inspirational editor who will bring her long translation experience as well as her standing as a poet to the role. I feel sure she’ll build on the magazine’s strengths and will bring new readers to the magazine.'

On her appointment, Clare Pollard said:

'In a Twitter biog, attempting to sum up my personality in the minimum number of words, I wrote: 'Poet. Reader. Into politics, travel and translation.' Given this, I think anyone can see that the editorship of MPT is the pinnacle of my ambitions! I am incredibly honoured to be taking over from Sasha Dugdale, who has edited my favourite magazine so flawlessly over the last five years. It has never been less than covetable and essential.

Without translation, we are muting most of the world. This matters: for our politics, our planet, but also our poetry, which becomes formulaic and complacent. Every time I learn about one of the poetries of the world - its tropes, its techniques, its essential difference from our own - I feel that thrill of entering a new way of thinking. I hope to continue Sasha's work in making our readers feel a thrill each time Modern Poetry in Translation arrives in the post.'
