Helen Dunmore wins posthumous Costa poetry award | 03-Jan-18

Helen Dunmore has won the prize for poetry at the Costa Book Awards for her 10th and final collection, Inside the Wave, completed a few weeks before her death. Dunmore is the second person in the prize's 47-year history to be given the accolade after their death. Ted Hughes was the first.

The poet was named along with four other writers who won across five categories in the Costa Book Awards. These five books now go forward to be in the running for the overall 2017 Costa Book Of The Year.

Inside the Wave includes Dunmore's final poem, 'Hold Out Your Arms', written just days before her death. It begins:

Death, hold out your arms for me

Embrace me

Give me your motherly caress,

Through all this suffering

You have not forgotten me.

The judges described the collection as "a final, great achievement".

The overall winner of the Costa Book Awards will be announced on January 30 in London.
