Creative Wales Award Winners | 14-Mar-08

Congratulations to the three writers who have received a Creative Wales Award from the Arts Council of Wales. Robert Minhinnick and Menna Elfyn will each receive major awards of £20,000 and Richard Gwyn will receive £12,000. The Creative Wales Awards will enable them to focus on creativity away from other work and financial commitments and will allow room to breathe, a chance to evaluate, to experiment and innovate.

Poet and essayist Robert Minhinnick proposes to write ten interlinked essays on migration. Welsh-language poet Menna Elfyn intends to research and write a prose poem about aspects of sleep, in a volume that will bridge memory and imagination, poetry and prose. Novelist and poet Richard Gwyn proposes to write a cross-genre illustrated memoir, combining narrative fiction, essay, diary, travel journalism, illustration, and medical journalism.

David Alston, Arts Director of the Arts Council of Wales, commented: "As ever the whole process of arriving at this year's Creative Wales Award winners was an exacting and stimulating task for those involved.  Creative Wales Awards are for artists who have in many ways already proved themselves but who are setting themselves on courses into uncharted waters to explore and experiment. Robert Minhinnick, Menna Elfyn, and Richard Gwyn are certainly set to do that and as a result, stretch genres, forms and ways of writing."
