National Poetry Competition winners announced | 13-Mar-05

The winners of the 2004 National Poetry Competition, judged by Ciaran Carson, Elaine Feinstein, and the Poetry Library's Librarian, Simon Smith, were announced today in the Independent on Sunday.

First prize went to Jon Sait, a stone sculptor from Cardiff, for his poem 'Homeland'. Second prize was won by Matthew Caley for his poem 'L.Z'. Matthew Caley is Senior Lecturer in Graphic Communication at the University of Wolverhampton. The third prize went to 'Gene' by Mario Petrucci, who is a scientist and writer, as well as Chair of the Advisory Fellow of the Royal Literary Fund.

All three poems, as well as an article by Ciaran Carson, can be read in today's Independent on Sunday.
