WS Merwin announced as new US Poet Laureate | 14-Jul-10
The poet W.S. Merwin - whose collections include The Carrier of Ladders and The Shadow of Sirius, both of which won the Pulitzer Prize - has been named as the 17th United States Poet Laureate.
He succeeds Kay Ryan, who has held the post since 2008. Previous US poets laureate include Billy Collins, Charles Simic and Mark Strand.
