Liz Lochhead announced as new Scots Makar | 22-Jan-11

Poet and playwright Liz Lochhead has been announced as the new Scots Makar.

The position - comparable to the Poet Laureate role in England - was created in 2004 and given to Edwin Morgan, who held the title until his death in 2010.

First Minister Alex Salmond and former first ministers Lord McConnell and Henry McLeish confirmed Lochhead in the post at the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh on the 19th January 2011.

Lochhead said: "I am as delighted as I am surprised by this enormous honour. I accept it on behalf of poetry itself, which is, and always has been, the core of our culture... poetry - the reading of it, the writing of it, the saying it out loud, the learning of it off by heart - all of this matters deeply to ordinary Scottish people everywhere."

Lochhead published her first collection, 'Memo for Spring', in 1972, and also has written verse plays, stage comedies, and pieces for television and radio.
