Poem by Samuel Butler | 14-May-05

"I fall asleep in the full and certain hope
That my slumber shall not be broken
And that though I be all-forgetting
Yet shall I not be all-forgotten
But continue that life in the thoughts
And deeds of those I have loved

Comments:

It's from chapter 10 of "Erewhon Revisited," by Samuel Butler, and was written by Butler as the epitaph of a female Erwhonian who died about 1550, as desribed by his father. (Fictional father, of course, in the novel.)
