Comments:

hello

i believe the poem this line comes from, is in the book of poems LOVE, DEATH, AND THE CHANGING OF THE SEASONS by marilyn hacker.

i don't have the book, and i haven't read the poems in their entirety, but that line is quoted in the novel PAGES FOR YOU by sylvia brownrigg. one of the characters in that novel, anne arden, gives the book as a gift to her future lover, flannery jansen. (i understand the poems in the book echo the older woman - younger woman relationship that is being approached at that moment in the novel)

the novel says that the poem the line in question comes from, is one of the early poems in the book, if that helps you find it !
Lynda Poole

Thank you Lynda. The poem is indeed from Love, Death and the Changing of the Seasons by Marilyn Hacker, and the title of the poem is 'Wagers'
