The Spindle - I seek among the hedgerows | 26-Oct-09

Enquirer is trying to trace the author of the following poem, learnt by heart at Coberley School in Cheltenham in the 1930s-1940s:

The Spindle

I seek among the hedgerows
Where all the leaves are bright
To find a little spindle fruit
Each with its orange light
There are no other fruit like these
So rosie pink they grow
And I'd not barter them for haws
Nor hips white-beam or slow
I would not change for mountain ash
Nor holly grow so gay
Those little shining lantern fruits
That light me on my way
