Hundreds of elephants Hannibal had... | 21-Oct-10

A children's poem:

'Hundreds of elephants Hannibal had, when Hannibal crossed the Alps,

Some poor elephants stumbled and died, stumbled and died on the mountainside...'

Our enquirer's mother learnt this at school, back in the 1940s.

Comments:

This quote is from "When Hannibal Crossed the Alps" by Eleanor Farjeon.
I am looking for a copy myself but it only seems to be in a book of choral speaking poems called Crocodile and Other Poems. I had hoped to download a copy to use with my class tomorrow but sadly there doesn't seem to be one on the net. I shall just have to order the book and wait for it to arrive.
Best wishes,
Rosie

Hannibal

Hannibal crossed the Alps,
Hannibal crossed the Alps,
With his blackmen,His brown men
His countrymen, His townmen,
With his Gauls and his Spaniards,
His horses and elephants
Hannibal crossed the Alps,

Hannibal crossed the Alps,
Hannibal crossed the Alps,
For his bow-men, his spearmen
His front-men, his rear-men,
his Gauls and his Spaniards,
His horses and elephants,
Wanted the Roman scalps!

And thats why
Hannibal,Hannibal,Hannibal,
Hannibal crossed the Alps.

The poem below us similar but not the same. I had the above poem in my English poetry book in 5th class at primary school in the early 1970s. HANNIBAL CROSSED THE ALPS, HANNIBAL CROSSED THE ALPS, HUNDREDS OF ELEPHANTS HANNIBAL HAD WHEN HANNIBAL CROSSED THE ALPS. SOME POOR ELEPHANTS TUMBLED AND DIED WHEN HANNIBAL CROSSED THE ALPS, TUMBLED AND DIED ON THE MOUNTAINSIDE WHEN HANNIBAL CROSSED THE ALPS. That's all I remember. The English Syllabus changed a year later and I believe that particular poetry book was replaced. Hope this helps, Please excuse my mish mash comment. Trying to write this on a small phone.

I learnt this poem at Infants' School in the 1950's. I later found the book - Adventures into Poetry for Primary Schools Book 1 selected and arranged by Mary Daunt - in a second hand book shop.

HANNIBAL?S ELEPHANTS

Hannibal crossed the Alps:
Hannibal crossed the Alps:
Hundreds of elephants Hannibal had,
When Hannibal crossed the Alps.

Some poor elephants stumbled and died
When Hannibal crossed the Alps;
Stumbled and died on the mountain side
When Hannibal crossed the Alps;

Stumbled and fell on the ice and snow
When Hannibal crossed the Alps;
Stumbled and fell to the valleys below
When Hannibal crossed the Alps.

Only a few poor elephants left
When Hannibal crossed the Alps;
And swinging their trunks they marched on Rome
When Hannibal crossed the Alps.
