How can a heart be worthy of joy | 05-Oct-14

Enquirer is trying to find out the author of this poem:

How can a heart be worthy of joy
That hasn't found courage in sorrow?
How can today bring happiness
If it builds tawdry tales for tomorrow?
Who can expect to gather smiles
Who has planted a string of resentment?
Who can stir trouble the whole of the time
And gain the reward of contentment?

The poem was handwritten on a piece of scrap paper, inserted in a poetry book that the enquirer bought from a second hand bookshop in Abingdon (then Berkshire but now Oxfordshire) in the 1950s.
